Annual Lions Sponsored Curragh Walk 2012

Please Assembly at 2.15pm.  Walk starts  2.30pm

The Newbridge & Kildare Lions Club sponsored walk will take place on Sunday 7th of October 2012, and the disco for participating children will

be held on Sunday 21st of October in the Keadeen Hotel. The walk will be, as usual, on the Curragh Plains & the Curragh Racecourse.

Along with our Lion members, we will have the Garda, the Civil Defence & the Order of Malta in attendance.

We are always delighted to have Teachers, Parents & other family members to participate on the day.

See Map below for details of starting points.    Please assemble at 2.15pm.

For over twenty years Newbridge Kildare Lions Club ran a highly successful annual 10 Mile Cycle Rally.  The Cycle event whilst being very popular with school children was converted to an annual sponsored walk to minimise risk to the participants.

This popular "Charity Sponsored Walk" event is run each year in October.   Designed as a joint school and community fundraiser the event relies heavily on the participation of both local Primary & Secondary schools, Youth Clubs, their teachers, the pupils & parents.

Each year our sponsored walk increases in popularity with the growing communities of Kildare and Newbridge.  Last year our walk attracted over 500 Participants from the local community and raised over  20,000.  Because we rely heavily on the support of local schools to promote the event amongst their pupils our club automatically returns 70% of the funds generated to the participating schools.

The remaining funds enter our Lions Club charity fund which is mainly used to give support to local respite care.

If your school or club would like to participate in this years Sponsored walk please contact Lion Greg Connelly on 087,2555783.   (

Please nominate a contact Teacher who will distribute & control the Sponsorship cards and who will promote the event with the Parents and Children.  Greg will visit your school to explain the Event to the Children and allocate Sponsorship Cards to your school.  Please let us know how many sponsorship cards you will need.

Promotion & Route MAP posters are also available.

The walk is followed up by a children's daytime disco at the Keadeen hotel on Sunday October 21st at 3pm.  After the disco there is a raffle organised for the children, top prize being two Bicycles, followed by many other prizes!   Lion Rory DeBruir from Kildare town organises a bus to transport children from Kildare to and from the Hotel Keadeen.  The combination of the walk and the disco makes the event very popular with the school children.  The disco is often the first disco attended by children and over the years has become in a way a "rite of passage"  for many children growing from Newbridge and Kildare.   Local D.J.  Jimmy Wickham provides the music & lights.  Hotel Keadeen offer a special children's alcohol free bar selection at low prices.  Lion members & parents act as stewards on both the walk and at the Disco.  We always welcome the participation of parents at all our events.  We need your help so please join us on the day!

Lions would like to thank the Curragh Racecourse for their annual support of this event in allowing the walk to take place on the race course which is a excellent venue for the event.

Special thanks also to JHM Distribution Ltd & Balidor Minerals for their generous supply of food & beverages for the feeding station at the midway point of the walk! We aim to give each cardholding participant and guardian a bottle of mineral water, crisps & a chocolate bar at the midway point just to ensure the children's energy levels are maintained.  Both JHM & Balidor Minerals have been very good to sponsor the event and the value of their donation exceeds 2,000 Euros.   Donation boxes will be positioned at the feeding point for any grown ups without Sponsorship cards who may wish to make a small nominal donation.

Also special thanks to McLoughlin Cycles & Nursery, Main Street Newbridge who sponsor the two bicycles for the raffle prize.  Lastly thank you to the local Gardai, Civil Defense and the Order of Malta who attend the event each year to give valuable safety support and backup.

Lastly we are always delighted to see Parents & Teachers taking part on the walk (&Disco) with their children.

Your helpful assistance on the day of the Walk and at the Disco is most appreciated.

Kind regards,
